Just a short post today,
A friend drew my attention to this colour film of Berlin in July 1945 which covers the destruction and depravity to Berlin’s society immediately after the war. It is pretty incredible seeing the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag within a context of total war, where the surrounding areas have essentially been blown to pieces. I went to Berlin last summer and walked along many of the streets shown in the video and saw these two German icons and assess the contrast between 1945 and 2014 is astonishing. This film categorises war as destructive, and to see the first-hand impact and aftermath of the war on local infrastructure makes me wonder how the city was able to be rebuilt into a modern and financially secure centre of the European continent.
